According to the organizers, 10,000 signatures have so far been received for the popular petition for five days of educational leave per year in Saxony. More than 60,000 forms for the petition are still in circulation, Christian Dahms, deputy representative of the petition and Secretary General of the Saxony State Sports Association, announced in Dresden on Monday. "The time is ripe for a law on educational leave in Saxony too. Volunteering and voluntary work do not work without further training and qualifications." With five days of paid time off, volunteers would experience appreciation and concrete support.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to find people who want to get involved for the common good, said Daniela Kolbe, Vice President of the German Trade Union Confederation in Saxony. It is a scandal that volunteers in Saxony have to sacrifice their precious free time or even take vacation for further training. The collection of signatures began at the end of August. If 40,000 signatures are collected, the motion can be submitted to the president of the state parliament, where it will be checked for admissibility. It then goes to parliament for discussion and decision-making. If the MPs reject the bill, the petitioners can launch a referendum. This requires at least 450,000 signatures within six months. If successful, a referendum will be held. An alliance of trade unions, church, independent and social organizations and parties with more than 60 partners is campaigning for the referendum.
