According to the organizers, 10,000 signatures have so far been received for the popular petition for five days of educational leave per year in Saxony. More than 60,000 forms for the petition are still in circulation, Christian Dahms, deputy representative of the petition and Secretary General of the Saxony State Sports Association, announced in Dresden on Monday. "The time is ripe for a law on educational leave in Saxony too. Volunteering and voluntary work do not work without further training and qualifications." With five days of paid time off, volunteers would experience appreciation and concrete support.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to find people who want to get involved for the common good, said Daniela Kolbe, Vice President of the German Trade Union Confederation in Saxony. The collection of signatures began at the end of August. If successful, a referendum will be held. An alliance of trade unions, church, independent and social organizations and parties with more than 60 partners is campaigning for the referendum.
