Festival in Osthessen (East Hesse) - 10,000 people celebrated at Hippie-Festival

Four days, five stages and a lot of program: The organizers of the Herzberg Festival have drawn a positive balance at its conclusion. Under the motto "Hippeace United," 10,000 visitors have attended since Thursday on the grounds at Burg Herzberg. The four-day spectacle ends on Sunday evening. For instance, the British band Kula Shaker and the former Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason with his band Saucerful of Secrets were supposed to perform on the stage.

"The mood is really great. The rain on Saturday didn't ruin it either," said Festival business manager Gunther Lorz. The hippie festival is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany.

To reach younger generations, the organizers had rearranged the festival this year. "Love and Peace is also possible with new music," Lorz had said beforehand. Over four days, the festival on the meadow at the foot of Burg Herzberg offered performances from bands in the areas of Rock, Folk, Blues and Reggae. Among them were the Australian band Wolfmother, the artist Dobet Gnahoré, and the singer Xavier Rudd. The number of tickets was limited to 10,000 in this year.

The current edition is the first since the legalization of cannabis. There is no difference from previous festivals, Lorz had also mentioned in advance regarding the handling of the drug at the event: "Because there are many children on site, no one just throws a joint on the ground. People also behave with their joints." Children and adolescents up to and including 14 years old have free entry to the festival.

The music festival was first celebrated in 1968 and is therefore even older than the legendary Woodstock Festival of 1969, which is considered the musical peak of the US hippie movement.

  1. Despite the rain on Saturday, Festival business manager Gunther Lorz mentioned that the mood at the Herzberg Festival was still great, with 10,000 visitors enjoying the four-day event.
  2. Among the anticipated performances at the festival were Pink Floyd's former drummer Nick Mason with Saucerful of Secrets and the British band Kula Shaker.
