Second-Tier German Football League - 1. FC Nuremberg acquires Chatzialexiou.

According to a report by Bild, football club FC Nürnberg has hired a new sports director following their separation from Dieter Hecking. The likely successor is Joti Chatzialexiou, who previously worked with the German Football Association (DFB) leading national teams, and who has allegedly convinced the board at FCN. Chatzialexiou is rumored to sign a contract with the Bavarian second division club until 2027. Benjamin Schmedes from Vitesse Arnheim and Alain Sutter, most recently with FC St. Gallen, were also considered for the position.

Hecking was let go by the club in early May. Hecking served as Nuremberg's successful coach from December 2009 to December 2012, before becoming the sports director at FCN for the first time in his career in 2020.

Will Chatzialexiou need to hire a new coach right away?

Chatzialexiou has a significant challenge ahead. The Nuremberg team's performance has been disappointing in recent seasons and is currently experiencing a reverse in development. In a statement, supervisory board chairman Peter Meier cited these issues as reasons for the separation of Hecking.

Chatzialexiou will need to restructure the squad and address the uncertainty surrounding coach Cristian Fiel's future. Reports suggest he may be heading to Hertha Berlin, where he is rumored to be the top candidate to succeed Pal Dardai. Sporting director Olaf Rebbe told the "Nuremberg News," "There's zero percent chance of that right now." Although the two have agreed in principle, Hertha has yet to make an official offer to release Fiel from his contract with Nuremberg, which expires in 2025. Earlier, Bild reported that Hertha and Nuremberg's current coach had "basically agreed" on a future move.

Is Fiel already set on leaving for Hertha?

Hertha and Fiel, said to be on vacation, have agreed they will keep in touch. However, no official offer from Hertha has been made to pay the release fee for the contract Fiel has with Nuremberg, which runs until 2025. Contrary to previous reports, Rebbe states there is currently no agreement set in place.
