1.75 million employees commute nationwide

Hesse's largest city also has the highest number of commuters: 455,000 employees travel from their home to work in Frankfurt. In total, 1.75 million professionals commute to work across the borders of their home municipality within Hesse, as announced by the State Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Wednesday. The figures are from the year 2022.

107,000 people commute to the state capital Wiesbaden and 91,000 to Darmstadt. Weekend commuting, part-time work and working from home: not all of these routes are covered every working day.

According to the statisticians, 63 out of 422 municipalities in Hesse have more in-commuters than out-commuters. The reverse is true for 359 municipalities. Proportionally, the most commuters to Eschborn come from other places of residence: 93 percent of all employees in Eschborn live elsewhere.

In contrast, according to the data, Liederbach im Taunus, Neuberg and Espenau are the Hessian municipalities with the highest "out-commuting rate": in each case, 87 percent of employees living here commute to work in another municipality.

These statistics reveal that despite 63 municipalities having more in-commuters than out-commuters in Hesse, traffic patterns show that Liederbach im Taunus, Neuberg, and Espenau have the highest "out-commuting rates," with over 87% of their employed residents commuting to work in other municipalities. Additionally, traffic data indicates that Traffic in Municipalities with higher out-commuting rates might require more consideration when it comes to work-related commuting policies.
