Soccer - 0:3, interruptions, red: Speidel's bitter Hansa evening

Uwe Speidel had to helplessly accept the final whistle on the sidelines. The interim coach of second-division soccer club Hansa Rostock had conceded a 3-0 (0-1) defeat at SC Paderborn on Friday evening in a match overshadowed by crowd trouble. The match was interrupted twice and goalkeeper Markus Kolke (63rd minute) was shown the red card after an emergency brake. "The red card made it difficult, of course," Speidel told pay-TV channel Sky. "After the second or third goal, of course, it was over."

The 52-year-old took over as coach of the Hanseatic team on Wednesday after Alois Schwartz was dismissed. Speidel is not intended to be a long-term solution. The encounter is unlikely to have given him any desire for more. Paderborn's Kai Klefisch (20') first hit the crossbar, followed shortly afterwards by Adriano Grimaldi (23') to take the lead. The match had already been interrupted for the first time by this point.

The game was interrupted for nine minutes in the 13th minute because Rostock fans had set off pyrotechnics. The background to the riots was the protest against the DFL's decision in favor of an investor deal. "At that point, the game was still quite open," said Speidel. "We didn't really get off to a good start. We didn't really implement the plan we had."

The score was 0:1 going into the break. "It got a bit loud in the dressing room at half-time. Also from the boys amongst themselves," said Speidel. "We addressed a few things very clearly." The 52-year-old saw "an open game at the start of the second half - for ten minutes". In the 56th minute, Rostock supporters once again set off pyrotechnics. This time, the match was interrupted for 19 minutes. "The second interruption was anything but convenient for us," said Speidel.

Paderborn quickly got back into the game, but David Kinsombi (58) missed the Rostock goal. Hansa keeper Kolke was too late when he attempted to clear the ball from Ilyas Ansah just outside the penalty area. Referee Wolfgang Haslberger initially decided on a yellow card for Kolke and a penalty, but corrected the decision to red and a free-kick after a tip-off from the video referee. Freshly substituted Nils Körber was unable to hold onto the resulting free-kick and Raphael Obermair (66) scored to make it 2-0.

Ten-man Rostock continued to pull back, with Paderborn's Sebastian Klaas (71) only hitting the post. In the 75th minute, Kai Klefisch headed home from a corner. Rostock now spend the winter in 16th place in the table. They want to use the upcoming winter break with a new coach to set the right tone for the second half of the season. Immediately after the final whistle, the Rostock fans gave their own fans a different message: "There's really no need for rocket fire. So much can happen," said Kolke. "I'm happy that nobody was hit." Hansa sporting director Kristian Walter also distanced himself "completely" from the riots on behalf of the club.
