0:2: Fiél has to let "it's okay" first round sink in

The final impression remains. The 0:2 against HSV shows that 1. FC Nürnberg has developed well under coach Fiél, but could have achieved even more with the first-round results.

Bundesliga 2 - 0:2: Fiél has to let "it's okay" first round sink in

After the "bitter" end to the year against Hamburger SV,Cristian Fiél was looking forward to some Christmas rest with his family - without non-stop soccer. During the short vacation until the start of training on January 2 (1 p.m.) with a public session at Valznerweiher, he wanted to "let one or two things sink in".

A lot has happened in his first six months as head coach of 1. FC Nürnberg in the 2nd Bundesliga, of which, of course, the last impression of the unfortunate 0:2 (0:0) on Saturday remains, but of course does not count alone. "On the whole, I can draw a positive conclusion," said the 43-year-old about the first half of the season.

Defender Florian Hübner summed up the seven wins, three draws and seven defeats as follows: "24 points - that's pretty good." In the end, the young team ran out of steam. "It was a good first half of the season. Four or five points are missing for a very good one," said Carl Klaus, who stood in well for the injured Christian Mathenia in goal in the last game of the year.

A possible home win against HSV would have been enough to start the new year with a sneaky glance at the top of the table. But in a wild game in front of 41,276 spectators, the "Club" lacked a cool head - or a difference-maker like HSV goal scorer Robert Glatzel. He made the most of his third top chance in the 80th minute. Jean-Luc Dompé increased the lead deep into stoppage time.

"If you want to win games, you have to score the goals. HSV scored them - and we didn't," commented Fiél. Goalkeeper Klaus mourned the "unbelievable opportunities". The ball hit the aluminum of the Hamburg goal three times. The crux of the game ultimately came in the 57th minute, when FCN striker Daichi Hayashi hit the crossbar within a few seconds and HSV defender William Mikelbrencis headed the rebound against his own post. "That was a shock moment," said Tim Walter, whose future as HSV coach remained uncertain even after the fortunate but important away win.

"Today was a game where you can beat HSV," moaned Hübner. And a game that showed that FCN are on the right track under Fiél's guidance after last season's last-minute rescue. "In the game with the ball, you can see a pattern of how we want to play and score goals," he said.

Fiél also named what was missing: "We need to improve our consistency against the ball. We conceded too many goals." Work will continue on improving in 2024. For now, everyone can let the grueling first half of the season sink in until the New Year.
