Thuringian CDU sets course for election year 2024
Party and parliamentary group leader Mario Voigt is to be nominated as the CDU's top candidate for the 2024 Thuringian state elections at a party conference in Mühlhausen this Saturday (09:30). The 46-year-old has long been seen as a potential challenger to Minister-President Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) in the election, which is expected to take place on September 1, 2024. However, the CDU will not select its list of candidates, in which Voigt would then be entitled to first place, until the end of February.
The Thuringian lead candidate for the European elections will also be nominated at the party conference. Marion Walsmann from Erfurt has been put forward by the Executive Committee. The 60-year-old is already a Member of the European Parliament. The party conference in Mühlhausen, at which CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann is expected as a guest, will set the course for the election campaign. State and local elections are due to be held in Thuringia next year.
At the party conference in Mühlhausen, several key roles for the 2024 elections are being decided, including the nomination of Mario Voigt as the CDU's top candidate for the Thuringian state elections. Marion Walsmann from Erfurt is also set to be nominated as the Thuringian lead candidate for the European elections.
Despite being nominated as the top candidate for the Thuringian state elections, Mario Voigt will not officially secure his placement at the top of the CDU's candidate list until the end of February 2024.
