Promptly at 12 pm, the entrance to the palace balcony was unlocked, and a joyful Frederik emerged first individually, followed by his wife, Queen Mary (52). Then, his children, Crown Prince Christian (18), Princess Isabella (17), Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine (both 13) joined them. To the excitement of spectators, the royals waved to their fans while receiving thunderous applause and cheers.

The king clad in a dark blue suit, paired with a light blue shirt and red tie, while Queen Mary showcased her vibrant pink dress. Meanwhile, Queen Margrethe (84) donned a magenta-colored gown.

Luckily for Frederik, the weather was splendid on his birthday as the royals were greeting their fans. However, the skies darkened over Copenhagen immediately after they retreated into the palace, with rainfall and thunder reported by Danish newspaper BT.

A longstanding tradition in the Danish royal family

The custom of celebrating birthdays from the balcony in Amalienborg Palace has been a longstanding affair in Denmark's royal family. The palace disclosed the day prior to Frederik's birthday that this tradition would persist.
