The north-east is currently being affected by intense storms.
Intense thunderstorms, fierce winds, and torrential downpours are casting chaos over certain areas in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein, and Hamburg. These meteorological phenomena paved the way for traffic accidents, roof fires, inundated basements, and seeped roads. Luckily, Brandenburg faced minimal consequences.
The western part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was lashed by tumultuous thunderstorms in the early evening, inundating streets in several towns. The police detailed four incidents involving traffic accidents on the A20 between Grevesmühlen and Wismar junctions, which were attributed to aquaplaning. Fortunately, nobody reported any severe damage. The "Nordkurier," a local newspaper, revealed that lightning had struck a home in Priborn but only sparked a superficial fire on the roof.
Simultaneously, torrential downpours and thunderstorms kept firefighters on their toes in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. In Hamberge's Stormarn region, the southern regional control center in Oldesloe noted a fire erupting after lightning struck a house. No one was at home during the incident. Around 100 firefighters were deployed to combat the flames.
The Herzogtum Lauenburg, Ostholstein, and Stormarn districts witnessed the most extensive damage caused by the deluge. First responders attended to more than 60 situations there. Most of these scenarios involved flooded foundations and roads. "The water was everywhere it should not have been," a spokesperson from the southern regional control center lamented.
In Hamburg, significant disruptions occurred because of the rainfall. The roads experienced flooding, which prompted numerous rescue calls, particularly in the northeastern section. On Highway 1, a segment between Ahrensburg and Stapelfeld was closed for around 150 meters due to flooding. In Hipstedt, Segeberg district, a rainwater retention basin in the vicinity of tipping point.
Brandenburg Untouched by Major Harm
Brandenburg dodged the brunt of the turmoil. Mild thunderstorms with heavy rain and gusts of wind impacted the state before the night settles in, causing flooded roads, inundated subterranean spaces, and traces of broken branches. To date, no injuries were reported. "The storm has bypassed us," a spokeswoman for the Northwest Regional Control Center declared, which encompasses Potsdam and the districts of Havelland, Prignitz, and Ostprignitz-Ruppin.
In Potsdam, the hub of the action, the Zeppelinstraße/Geschwister-Scholl-Straße intersection became engulfed by heavy rain. Streetcar services were temporarily suspended.
The districts of Barnim, Uckermark, and Oberhavel have been comparatively unscathed, at least for now. According to the North-East Regional Control Center in Eberswalde, which is in charge of Eberswalde and the aforementioned districts, "It wasn't as bad as anticipated." So far, the fire department handled 13 emergencies with 14 still active by 7.00 pm. They concentrated their efforts on the Oberhavel region, where cellars were submerged and branches blocked roads. "But it turned out less hazardous," a spokesperson confirmed.
