Streamer on Twitch to avoid legal action over encouraging a ruckus during a contest win in New York City, authorities note.
A guy named Cenat issued a public apology on social media and agreed to pay $55,000 to make amends after a crazy crowd of thousands of people wrecked landscaping in Union Square, the authorities declared.
According to the district attorney's office, they'll drop the charges once the apology is up on social media for 24 hours.
Last year in August, Cenat informed his viewers during a live Twitch stream that he was organizing a "huge giveaway" with computers, Play Station 5s, gift cards, and more in Union Square. At the time, he had almost 6.5 million Twitch followers, a number that's only increased since then.
When the day of the event arrived, the crowd transformed from a few hundred people to thousands pretty instantly, New York Police Department representatives stated.
This massive group caused various injuries, damages worth thousands of dollars, and over 60 arrests after the NYPD activated the highest level of disaster responses – a "Level 4" response – that they have, the police said.
A few days after the chaotic event, Cenat denounced the wild brawl, expressing his disappointment towards anyone who became destructive that day.
Cenat currently has over 5 million followers on YouTube, 9 million on Instagram, and 10 million on Twitch.
