State CDU wants to put forward top candidate for European elections

The CDU Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will nominate its top candidate for next year's European elections at a state representatives' meeting in Rostock today (from 18:00). The state executive had already nominated 45-year-old Jascha Dopp from Schwerin in mid-September. The European elections will take place on June 9, 2024.

After the last European elections in 2019, the CDU's long-standing MEP, Werner Kuhn from Zingst, resigned from the parliament in Strasbourg. In September, CDU state chairman Franz-Robert Liskow said that there had recently been a lack of an MEP in Strasbourg and Brussels who would stand up for the interests of the country.

David McAllister, MEP and Vice-President of the European People's Party, will be the guest speaker on Friday. The EPP group in the EU Parliament also includes MEPs from the Union.

On Saturday, the program for the local elections, which will take place at the same time as the European elections, will be presented at the CDU state party conference, which will also be held in Rostock. The Secretary General of the federal CDU, Carsten Linnemann, is also scheduled to speak.

The state CDU's decision to put forward a top candidate for the European elections aligns with the recent lack of strong representation for Germany in the EU Parliament, as highlighted by CDU state chairman Franz-Robert Liskow. The upcoming European elections on June 9, 2024, provide an opportunity for parties like the CDU to chose their representatives, ensuring the interests of their respective countries are represented effectively.
