Ryan Guzman, actor from '9-1-1', shares experiences with mental health issues.
Playing the role of firefighter Eddie Diaz in a popular show, Guzman recently opened up about his own journey with mental health on the podcast "I've Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario". He talked about the emotional struggles experienced by his character, who suffers from post traumatic stress syndrome, during Season 5. According to Guzman, it was a cathartic experience.
In the podcast, Guzman revealed how his personal struggles with depression and anxiety influenced his performance. Being brought up in a time where men were expected to be strong and not show emotions, he found it healing to incorporate some of these experiences into his work.
About seven years ago, Guzman had his own mental health crisis and even attempted suicide. Luckily, his attempt didn't succeed and he managed to get another chance at life. He has since worked towards overcoming the factors that led him to that point and moving forward. The death of his close friend Stephen "tWitch" Boss, whom he greatly admired, alongside this personal crisis were among the most impactful moments in his life. These incidents allowed him to develop a greater sense of compassion for others.
Addressing other men, Guzman urged them to not suppress their emotions. Instead, he suggested they should reach out to their friends for support.
In the past, Guzman appeared in "Step Up Revolution" and "Step Up All In", two dance-themed movies. He recently posted a tribute to his late friend Boss through a dance video on social media platforms.
