New "Tatort" about artificial intelligence

Shooting has started for a new "Tatort" with detective Thorsten Falke (Wotan Wilke Möhring): The case with the working title "The Coldest Machine" takes the Hamburg investigator with the scuffed leather jacket to the desolate Raschplatz behind Hanover's main train station. This is where homeless people and drug addicts meet. However, the film, which will be broadcast on ARD and the ARD media library in early 2025, does not focus on drug trafficking, but on artificial intelligence (AI).

In the case, an unknown stabber kills two people under the protection of a dense crowd. With the help of a new type of software, the police identify a mentally ill man as the likely perpetrator. His sister believes he is innocent, but Inspector Falke also remains skeptical.

Actor Wotan Wilke Möhring also trusts the human mind more than AI. "Data is just data," said the 56-year-old on Wednesday. A pilot, on the other hand, could say in an individual case: "I have a funny feeling, I'm not flying" and thus save 400 lives. The AI would never do that.

Chief Inspector Anaïs Schmitz (Florence Kasumba) from Göttingen joins the investigative team in Hanover to support Inspector Falke. "The Coldest Machine" also stars Peri Baumeister, Mirco Kreibich and Maria Dragus. For a long time, Franziska Weisz was Falke's partner in the Hamburg team as Chief Inspector Julia Grosz. She quit after 13 cases together. "Of course you miss someone who has been at your side for so long. That's inevitable," said Möhring on Wednesday.

People are intrigued by the portrayal of artificial intelligence in the new "Tatort" episode, as it's a departure from the typical drug trafficking stories. This media event, titled "The Coldest Machine," showcases the struggle between humans and AI, reflecting the views of actor Wotan Wilke Möhring, who strongly believes in the superiority of human judgment over AI.
