Mary Lou Retton Gives an Update on Her Current Health Problems
The well-known gymnast who made history during the Olympics had a life-threatening bout with lung illness a few months ago. She claimed that her doctors have not yet reached a conclusion about her health issues.
Nowadays, this former gymnast uses a supplemental oxygen supply to aid her recovery from the severe pneumonia she had.
"My doctors still don't know what's wrong with me. They're calling it a rare form of pneumonia," she informed "Entertainment Tonight."
She had been in the intensive care unit for a month last October, dealing with damage to her lungs.
"My lungs are really damaged. They'll stay this way permanently," she shared. Additionally, she stated that the experience shifted her way of thinking and she's been finding it difficult to cope mentally.
"Give me a hip to rehab, give me a shoulder. Lungs are a new challenge altogether," Retton added.
Her four daughters initiated a crowd-funding page to help when their mother was battling for her life, mentioning that her medical costs were soaring.
"They were just trying to care for me," Retton said of her girls' actions. "I was in the ICU for a month. The bills were and still are coming in."
All money raised has been directed towards her treatment, and despite her health difficulties, she maintains a hopeful, optimistic attitude.
"I have a lot to anticipate, and I know that," she said.
