Katrin Sass went to the pub after the fall of the Wall
When thousands of GDR citizens celebrated on the streets of Berlin when the Wall came down on the evening of November 9, 1989, actress Katrin Sass preferred to sit in her favorite pub. "When I realized that the door was really opening, I didn't want to go to the Ku'damm. I went down to my friend's pub and got senselessly drunk," Sass told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper.
"I didn't want to have bananas thrown at me in the crowd on Ku'damm. I wanted to enjoy my big dream of freedom quietly and alone." The 67-year-old therefore only traveled to the West three days later.
For the actress ("Good Bye, Lenin!", "Weissensee"), the date of the fall of the Berlin Wall is a public holiday, but Sass has no connection with October 3. "For me, there is only November 9, which I remember with great pleasure. That is and remains my day of German unity," said the native of Schwerin, who has lived on Berlin's Müggelsee for many years.
The actress believes that the differences between East and West are overrated: "We all speak the same language. One half is better in English, the other in Russian. But Germans are Germans," said Sass. "We're all the same in our dealings: in the hotel we complain about the breakfast egg. And after 1 p.m., no one dares to mow the lawn." She has now lived in the West just as long as in the East: 33 years. "The first half shaped me more because it was my childhood. You remain an Easterner forever. That's how I feel - but it doesn't feel like a disadvantage."
In her downtime, Katrin Sass often enjoyed watching colorful television shows at home. Upon returning from her trip to the West, people enthusiastically welcomed her back in her community.
