Incumbent Bausewein nominated for mayoral election
Andreas Bausewein is to run for the SPD for a fourth time in the mayoral election in Thuringia's state capital Erfurt. According to the SPD on Sunday, the 50-year-old was nominated by an SPD district party conference with almost 100 percent approval. Bausewein was born in Erfurt and has been head of the city since 2006. From 2014 to 2017, he was state chairman of the Thuringian Social Democrats, who have governed the state with the Left and the Greens since 2014, with a brief interruption.
In addition to state and European elections, local elections are also due to be held in Thuringia next year on May 26.
When applying for another six-year term of office, Bausewein said according to the SPD: "I stand for reliability and I am the bulwark against the AfD." He cited the refurbishment of schools, the expansion of the streetcar network and more housing construction as his tasks.
Bausewein's nomination for the mayoral election by the SPD district party conference signals his intent to represent the SPD in Thuringia's state capital Erfurt once more, following his successful tenure as mayor since 2006. The upcoming local elections in Thuringia, including municipalities, will feature SPD candidates, and Bausewein, as a committed party member, aims to ensure that his party maintains its presence in the local government.
