Heimatunion accuses Greens and SPD of denying reality

The conservative Heimatunion has accused Saxony's CDU coalition partners, the Greens and the SPD, of "denying reality". "In the state elections on September 1, 2024, voters will hopefully give the right answer and inspire these two parties to rethink their unrealistic policies with an election result below 5 percent," the association declared in Dresden on Monday. It sees itself as a grassroots movement within the CDU and CSU parties.

The scolding was prompted by statements made by politicians from the Greens and SPD on education policy. Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) had made it clear in a discussion the previous week that the quality of education in Saxony was suffering due to high migration figures. "We can no longer guarantee the quality of education because we have to educate pupils who come from outside," he had said during a discussion. This sparked displeasure and harsh criticism from the Greens and SPD.

"The Heimatunion can only agree with Minister President Kretschmer. It is obvious that the considerable increase in pupils who have obvious difficulties in mastering the German language is stretching our education system beyond its limits," said Heimatunion leader Sven Eppinger on Monday. The Greens, Social Democrats and the Left, on the other hand, had accused the CDU of failing in its education policy in the past.

The Heimatunion, being a part of the CDU and CSU, expresses concern about the education policies of the Greens and SPD, believing that voters might shift their support to parties promoting more realistic policies in the 2024 state elections. Despite the criticism from the Greens and SPD towards CDU's past education policies, the Heimatunion supports Minister President Kretschmer's view on the impact of high migration figures on the quality of education.
