Garage for company vehicles costs more 9.3 million euros

Work has begun on a new large garage for the state's central transport service. The measures for the new building on the campus of the Ministry of Finance in Erfurt are set to cost 9.3 million euros, as announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure on Monday. The single-storey garage will ensure the efficiency of the central transport service, said Infrastructure Minister Susanna Karawanskij (Left Party) before the foundation stone was laid on Monday. According to Finance Minister Heike Taubert (SPD), the new building would create the necessary capacity for the transport service.

The Central Transport Service transports materials, files and other mail between ministries, courts, tax offices and other offices in the state. According to the Ministry of Finance's website, the vehicles transport around 1.45 million items of mail every year. The transport service also assigns and manages self-drive service vehicles.

The transport service is located on the government campus, which used to be a Wehrmacht and later an NVA barracks site. The buildings were refurbished in the 1990s for the Ministry of Finance and the State Finance Directorate. Service vehicles and equipment were previously stored in the old armored halls. However, it was no longer economically viable to renovate them. Therefore, the new large garage is to be built on 2400 square meters. A photovoltaic system is planned for the roof. The work is scheduled to end in fall 2024.

The construction of the new garage will help manage the traffic of the company vehicles within the government campus. Despite the significant investment, the traffic administration is confident that the new infrastructure will improve the efficiency of the central transport service.
