FDP top candidate nominated for European elections
The FDP Lower Saxony has nominated Jan-Christoph Oetjen as its lead candidate for the 2024 European elections. The 45-year-old received 91% of the vote at the state representatives' meeting in Oldenburg on Saturday, the party announced. Oetjen has represented the FDP Lower Saxony in the European Parliament since 2019.
In his candidacy speech, Oetjen emphasized that Europe is fragile, but not defenceless. The freezing of payments to countries with authoritarian tendencies is an effective means of countering this. This was a success and could be used to defend the rule of law and democracy in Europe.
In last year's state elections, the FDP missed out on a place in the state parliament in Hanover with 4.7 percent.
The FDP's decision to nominate Jan-Christoph Oetjen as their lead candidate for the EU elections indicates their commitment to participating in European politics. With various EU Parties competing in the upcoming elections, Oetjen's experience in the European Parliament will be crucial in advocating for the FDP's interests.
