Movie soundtrack - Disney musician Richard Sherman passes away.
An iconic songwriter responsible for timeless tunes in Disney classics like "Mary Poppins" and "The Jungle Book" has passed away. Richard Sherman, aged 95, breathed his last in Beverly Hills on Saturday, as confirmed by Disney.
Famous for his collaborations with older brother Robert, the duo wrote countless songs for movies and television shows throughout their career spanning six decades. In Germany,"I Wanna Be Like You" from "The Jungle Book," also known as "Ich wär' so gern wie du," gained widespread popularity.
The Disney Company shared that Richard Sherman earned two Academy Awards during his 65-year tenure—both for the 1964 musical gem "Mary Poppins"—including for the song "Chim Chim Cher-ee." He was nominated for nine Oscars in total, and collected three Grammys and 24 gold and platinum records.
Disney honored his legacy, stating, "Generations of filmgoers and amusement park visitors have been introduced to the Disney universe through the Sherman brothers' exceptional and enduring songs. The duo's work continues to stand as a benchmark in Walt Disney's lyrical tradition."
In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, Richard is survived by two daughters, a son, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He'll be laid to rest in Los Angeles on Friday, per Disney's announcement.
