Coppola Finances "Megalopolis" With His Personal Funds As Director

Francis Ford Coppola, an American director, is releasing his latest project called "Megalopolis" in Cannes. The 85-year-old creator is funding this mega-production through the profits he made from his vineyard. Reports suggest the movie will cost millions, which no studio was willing to cover because of its intricate complexity.

Coppola seems unfazed by the financial risk associated with this debatable film. He said, "Money doesn't matter, it's all about friends. Because a friend will never leave you high and dry. Money can evaporate." The director put approximately 120 million euros into this sci-fi drama as no studio was keen on funding its lavishness.

The cash he received from his vineyard helped him take the risk and invest in the film. He had faced a similar situation when he bought the winery, which turned out to be a great investment, and now he's doing the same with "Megalopolis." "I have no money issues." He added, "My children, Sofia, and Roman (...) all have thriving careers." Both of them are also directors and screenwriters.

"Megalopolis" is a political sci-fi film that compares the Roman Empire with New York City, which is depicted as New Rome in the movie. The conflict between Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) and visionary inventor Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver) arises due to disagreements over the city's governance and redesign. Critics have commented that the movie is decadent, grotesque, and overflowing with ideas.

They've declared that this film will never reach a vast audience, and it seems like a fair assumption. "Hollywood Reporter" remarked that the filmmaking community has realized the same thing.

Criticism around "Megalopolis" intensified when The Guardian reported that Coppola inappropriately attempted to kiss extras while shooting. However, executive producer Darren Demetre denied the incident.

During a press conference, the journalists present couldn't ask their questions due to limited time constraints. Coppola discussed his classic films, specifically "The Godfather," and mentioned he was considering releasing a fresh scene from it, which sparked some excitement among the audience.

Coppola's "Apocalypse Now," which had won the Palme d'Or at Cannes 45 years ago, and "The Conversation," where he received the festival's top prize in 1974, were also brought up.
