Commemoration of victims of the Nazi pogroms: Daniel Hope expected

On the 85th anniversary of the pogrom night against Jews, numerous cities in Brandenburg are commemorating the victims of the National Socialists. The day of remembrance is overshadowed by the Hamas attack on Israel around four weeks ago. Since then, many anti-Semitic incidents in Germany have stirred up fear among Jews.

In Potsdam, star violinist Daniel Hope is expected to attend a commemorative event in the morning of November 9 at the Jewish cemetery. Potsdam's first rabbi, Michel Hirsch, is buried there. Daniel Hope, who was born in South Africa, is one of his descendants.

Brandenburg's Minister of Culture Manja Schüle (SPD) and Lord Mayor Mike Schubert (SPD) are also expected to attend the event. On Thursday evening, another commemoration of the 1938 pogrom night is planned in the state capital.

The cities of Cottbus and Frankfurt (Oder) are also commemorating the cruel murder of Jews. "November 9, 1938 must never be forgotten. This date also stands as a warning and reminder of where fear, hatred, methodical misinformation and a lack of education of the heart can lead people," said the city of Frankfurt. At that time, synagogues and Jewish institutions were vandalized, Jews attacked, murdered or deported all over Germany.

On November 9, a central commemorative event in Brandenburg will also commemorate the day the Wall came down in 1989. Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) will give a speech on the banks of Lake Griebnitz in Potsdam. White roses will be placed in the fragments of the former border fortifications as a sign of joy at the fall of the Wall.

The historical significance of November 9 is not limited to the 1938 pogrom night, as it also marks the day the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. Various municipalities in Brandenburg, including Potsdam, Cottbus, and Frankfurt (Oder), are holding commemorative events to honor the victims of the Nazi pogroms and to remind citizens of the devastating consequences of hatred and fear, as reflected in Brandenburg's Minister of Culture Manja Schüle's statement.
