Coach Fischer: The smile is back at Union Berlin
The end of the twelve-game losing streak should give 1. FC Union Berlin a boost in self-confidence. "The performance has already brought back a bit of joy, a smile. It hasn't triggered any storms of joy yet. But it was important to break the streak for once," said coach Urs Fischer on Saturday about the effects of the 1-1 draw at Italian champions SSC Napoli in the Champions League during the week.
On Sunday, the Berliners face unbeaten Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen (3.30pm/Sky). Union have lost their last eight games in the league and have slipped to the relegation places. "We have to try to pick up where we left off in Naples. I do believe that the team left a more stable impression, that we were more compact over 90 minutes and got that Union face on the pitch," said the 57-year-old Swiss.
The Rhinelanders are currently the best team in the league, according to Fischer. "We can't offer them many spaces," he said. "If they play their way into the half-spaces and have time to open up, the team has incredible quality."
- Despite their current league form, 1. FC Union Berlin will aim to replicate their performance against Napoli when they face Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, as coach Urs Fischer stated.
- The upcoming game against Bayer Leverkusen, known for their quality in half-spaces, presents a significant challenge for Union Berlin, who need to be mindful of the spaces they leave open, as noted by their coach.
