City wants to make it easier for senior citizens to move out of large apartments
The city of Osnabrück wants to develop a program to make it easier for older people to move out of apartments that have become too big in favour of young families. The city council has given the green light for the pilot project "Relocation in the neighborhood", said a spokesperson for the municipality on Wednesday.
Among other things, the administration is now to identify districts with mainly detached and semi-detached houses or semi-detached houses that offer good conditions for people to move out of an apartment that has become too large in order to move into a nearby age-appropriate apartment. The aim is also to look for properties in these neighborhoods where suitable exchange apartments can be set up. The administration will now begin work on the project, said the spokesperson. It is not yet clear when the first results will be available.
According to the initiators - an alliance of the Greens, the Volt and the SPD - new buildings alone cannot solve the problems of the tight housing market in Osnabrück. According to the information, only one or two people live in 60 percent of owner-occupied homes nationwide, mostly because the children have moved out. Many people cannot decide to move out because there is a lack of suitable, barrier-free and affordable alternative housing in their familiar surroundings.
The program developed by Osnabrück's city council could potentially facilitate living transitions for senior citizens in municipalities with abundant detached or semi-detached houses. By identifying suitable properties in these areas, the city aims to establish exchange apartments that cater to older individuals looking for age-appropriate housing.
