CDU in MV backs Jascha Dopp
State civil servant Jascha Dopp will be the lead candidate for the CDU Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the 2024 European elections. The state representatives nominated the 45-year-old from Schwerin with a large majority on Friday evening in Rostock. The civil servant nominated by the state executive committee received 118 out of 138 valid votes.
According to Dopp, he currently works as head of department for the state government and is responsible for preparing the state's European policy. He has degrees in European law, international relations and EU administration. He has already come second on the state list twice in European elections.
In his candidacy speech, Dopp addressed the issue of migration, among other things, and spoke out in favor of effective protection of the EU's external borders and repatriation agreements with other countries.
The election will take place in the north-east together with the local elections on June 9, 2024. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's CDU currently has no MEPs in the European Parliament. The seats are allocated according to internal party lists. After the last European elections in 2019, the long-standing CDU MEP Werner Kuhn from Zingst resigned from the parliament in Strasbourg.
The CDU in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern choosing Jascha Dopp as their lead candidate for the 2024 European elections signifies a significant shift in EU politics in the region. With no MEPs from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the current European Parliament, Dopp's placement on the internal party list could potentially lead to CDU representation at EU parties and elections.
