2021 - The World Health Organization classifies the novel coronavirus variant Omikron detected in southern Africa as "worrying". Countries such as Germany respond with restrictions on air travel, among other things.
2013 - Pope Francis calls for far-reaching reforms and a radical opening of the Catholic Church in his first apostolic exhortation.
2008 - The Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) is shaken by a bloody series of terrorist attacks. 175 people are killed, including three Germans. Hostage-takings in luxury hotels and a Jewish center keep the police on tenterhooks for days. The Indian authorities suspect that a Muslim terrorist group from Pakistan is behind the attacks.
2003 - Soccer player Uwe Seeler becomes the first sportsman to be made an honorary citizen of Hamburg.
1998 - 212 people are killed in a rail accident in northern India near Khanna in the state of Punjab.
1993 - Following attacks on Turkish facilities throughout Europe, Federal Interior Minister Manfred Kanther (CDU) bans the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and its sub-organizations in Germany. The PKK is fighting for an independent Kurdish state.
1988 - The European Film Awards are presented for the first time in Berlin. The main award goes to Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski for "A Short Film about Killing".
1983 - Six men steal gold bars and diamonds worth 26 million pounds, the equivalent of around 100 million marks (51.1 million euros), from a security depot near London. It is the biggest gold robbery in British criminal history to date.
1976 - SPD leader Willy Brandt is elected as the new President of the Socialist International in Geneva.
