Bayern boss: Neuer in top form also number one at the DFB

Bayern President Herbert Hainer believes goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is well on his way back to becoming a regular in the national soccer team. "It looks like he's already on the way to his old glory days. When he has reached that, there will be no other goalkeeper in the national team who should be in goal - because Neuer will simply be the best," said Hainer in an interview with the Munich newspaper "Abendzeitung" (Thursday).

The 37-year-old Neuer had recently shown again in the Bundesliga top match against Borussia Dortmund that he was the "back-up in person" for the record champions. However, in consultation with national coach Julian Nagelsmann and DFB goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg, the keeper will still be absent for the upcoming international matches against Turkey and Austria in mid-November. "There are also medical reasons for this. It's still too early," explained Neuer.

Marc-André ter Stegen (31) has recently become a regular in the DFB goal. "I think he's definitely number one at the moment," Neuer said recently.

The goalkeeper returned to the FC Bayern starting eleven at the end of October, 323 days after his skiing accident with a serious lower leg fracture. With a view to extending Neuer's contract, which expires next summer, Hainer asked for patience. "If everything continues to develop as it has recently, there's nothing to be said against it. But we'll give Neuer time now and then the sporting management will sit down with him in peace and quiet," said the club president.

FC Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer is currently dominating in the Bundesliga, earning praise from club president Herbert Hainer for his return to form. Despite this, Neuer will miss the upcoming national team matches against Turkey and Austria due to medical reasons and the presence of Marc-André ter Stegen, who has become the number one goalkeeper for the German national team.
