After parting ways with national coach: Looking ahead to the Olympics
After parting ways with national coach Martin Voss-Tecklenburg, DFB vice-president Celia Sasic has reaffirmed the importance of the German women's soccer team's possible participation in the 2024 Olympic Games. "I know how much the Olympics mean to women's soccer," said the former international at the Sports Press Ball in Frankfurt on Saturday. The 35-year-old was herself one of the bronze medal winners at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
"It's a very special feeling to compete for your country together with other athletes. That's why there's so much focus on it," emphasized Sasic.
The German Football Association announced on Saturday afternoon that the cooperation with Voss-Tecklenburg, who had recently been on a break, had ended with immediate effect. Following Voss-Tecklenburg's withdrawal due to illness after the World Cup, in which the German women were eliminated in the preliminary round, assistant coach Britta Carlson had initially taken over as head coach. At the beginning of October, the association installed Horst Hrubesch as interim coach. "We are ready for the next games," said Sasic.
On the way to the games in Paris, the Germans' toughest rivals in Nations League Group A3 are Denmark, who the DFB lost the first leg 2-0. The second leg will take place in Rostock on December 1, and a 2-0 win or a victory with a difference of more than three goals would see Hrubesch's team take over the lead in the table. The final match of the preliminary round will take place on December 5 at the Welsh side, who have no points so far. Only the group winners will have a chance of participating in the Olympics.
The German Football Association (DFB) is highly eager to see the women's soccer team participate in the 2024 Olympic Games, a sentiment shared by DFB vice-president Celia Sasic, who herself won a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics. The German women's soccer team, currently led by interim coach Horst Hrubesch, faces tough challenges in Nations League Group A3, including Denmark, to secure a spot in the Olympics.
