New Opel Frontera model is a hybrid SUV starting at 24,000 euros.

Opel resurrects a former model name and applies it to a comfortable family SUV geared towards affordable all-around use. ntv.de provides a detailed look at the new Opel Frontera.

The scene is set in Rüsselsheim's old design center, where Opel's new creation is shrouded in mystery. Guards patrol the area, while eagerly anticipating the reveal of the new Frontera. Will it follow the "A" and "B" models, or does it stem from the 1991 ladder-frame SUV? Yet, it's clear that the 17-centimeter height difference between the original Frontera with a two-door, short-wheelbase model and the new version places it at the upper end of the small car segment. With a length of 4.38 meters, the latest Frontera carves its own path.

Slipping past the curtain, the rear of the Frontera greets us. Initial thoughts echo Opel's Senator B. Although the rear lights differ significantly from the Senator, their segmented appearance resembles Opel's classic design. Upfront, the light unit is divided by a sheet metal strip—an unconventional yet intriguing feature. The contrasting black roof and a revamped Opel lightning bolt complete the look.

Comfort and practicality abound in the new Frontera

The Opel Frontera comes in a boyish trekking look.

The Frontera's interior dazzles with great aesthetics. In spite of its humdrum segment, the sloping, boxy trunk promises adequate space. The understated yet functional luggage compartment packs 460 liters in entry-level models and a spacious 1600 liters with folded rear seats. Upholding its status as a small car, the Frontera's capacity is impressive. Securing cargo is also accommodated thanks to elastic straps. The cabin upholds comfortable accommodations, as evidenced by ample knee and headroom. Families can even opt for a seven-seat variant.

Front and center, the extensive central display commands the Frontera, as it's the Car's command hub. For a more wallet-friendly option, Opel provides a cheaper model, swapping the left-side information screen for a smartphone holder and space to attach parking tickets or other documentation. The right-hand panel remains an instrument cluster with physical buttons for climate control and other features.

An innovative inclusion is the front-seat cushions, designed with a coccyx-protecting recess. Health considerations aside, the seats feel comfy enough for long drives.

Striking LED daytime running lights make the front-wheel drive vehicle recognizable.

In terms of drive systems, Opel emphasizes flexibility, offering two petrol hybrids in addition to two electric powertrains, each with a WLTP range of 300 and 400 kilometers. The 1.2-liter three-cylinder fuel-engines, generating 100 or 136 PS, team up with an 28 PS electric unit and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. A traditional manual transmission forces its way out as Opel focuses on adaptability.

The new Opel Frontera is anticipated to be available on the market for around 24,000 euros, making it a viable option for families larger in size. However, the upper-tier GS version including standard navigation and reverse cameras is expected to cost more. The battery-electric version enters the scene at an estimated 29,000 euros. It's near impossible to make electric SUVs any more affordable.

This new Opel creation stands out in the small car segment, balancing practicality with style. It will be a strong contender for those seeking a versatile and economical family vehicle.

The new Opel features a large display, but also physical buttons.
