Massive plume of smoke advances over Hamburg port.
In the port of Hamburg today, there are plenty of blue lights and a substantial cloud of smoke hovering over the city. It's still unclear if harmful pollutants have been released. Residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut.
A fire ignited at a company's site in the port of Hamburg this morning. A 30 by 20 meters pile of scrap metal at the site, where scrap metal is usually processed, started burning for reasons yet unknown, according to a police spokesperson. The fire department reported the blaze engulfed 60 tons of scrap metal. In total, approximately 80 firefighters were deployed. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
This incident triggered the development of a huge smoke cloud. An announcement was made urging individuals residing in the districts of Heimfeld, Harburg, and Wilhelmsburg to shut their windows and doors as well as disengage their ventilation and air conditioning systems. The fire department is continuously screening the smoke cloud for potential hazardous substances.
There are reports of closure and traffic hindrances around the site, with the police currently managing the situation. Furthermore, the southern Elbe has been closed to maritime traffic. A plan has been put into action to demolish the scrap pile using a grapple truck. Each component will then be extinguished individually.
