Ford EcoSport: A persuasive mini SUV featuring areas of concern

Mini-SUVs are big in Germany, and the Ford EcoSport is part of that trend. This compact SUV stands out for its spaciousness and relatively low cost. Sadly, its production has come to an end. Let's see how a used EcoSport measures up.

Ford unveiled the EcoSport in Germany and Europe in 2014, but it was already two years old back then. The second generation of this four-meter SUV had been in operation in South and Central America since 2012, continuing the success of the first (2003-2012). On the German market, it competed against the Fiat 500X, Opel Mokka, and Renault Captur. Ford retired it by 2023.

Quality

Regarding TUV inspections, the Ford EcoSport presents a mixed picture. The chassis test poses no problems; however, the lighting test is less impressive. The brakes raise some concerns, too. Potential buyers of older models should keep an eye out for oil loss.

Body and Interior

The 7th generation of the Fiesta (2008-2017) served as the base for the EcoSport. The SUV distinguished itself from its compact car sibling through SUV design cues such as the spare tire mounted on the rear door. The seating space is satisfactory, with the driver and front passenger comfortably positioned high. The trunk volume ranges from 333 to 1238 liters. Access to the cargo area is through a side-opening rear door.

By 2015, the EcoSport received a facelift. Ford addressed customer complaints about build quality from earlier models. The interior now featured chrome accents and a dimmable lighting system. The distinctive spare tire was removed. The dashboard remained cluttered with many control knobs.

There was a spare wheel on the tailgate at the start.

The next facelift in 2017 improved the interior with higher-quality materials, for instance, foam-backed plastic on the dashboard. The front design now resembled that of the larger sibling, the Kuga.

Engines and Drivetrain

The engine options for this small SUV were decent. Ford provided both gasoline and diesel options. All-wheel drive was also available. At launch, there was a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 82 hp/112 PS, the well-known 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo with 92 hp/125 PS, and the 1.5-liter diesel with 66 hp/90 PS.

The engines were generally paired with a five-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed automatic transmission was available for the four-cylinder gasoline engine. The gasoline engines consumed approximately 5.3 to 6.2 liters, while the diesel required 4.6 liters. With the first facelift in 2015, the diesel engine received a power boost, generating 70 hp/95 PS. Ford also adjusted the suspension to make the vehicle smoother over road bumps.

Between 2017 and 2019, Ford offered all-wheel drive alongside a 125 hp/170 PS 1.5-liter self-starter. Diesels were dropped from the engine range by the end of 2020—including the 88 hp/120 PS version of the 1.5-liter diesel. Only the 125 hp/170 PS and 103 hp/140 PS gasoline three-cylinders remained. In 2018, a 74 hp/100 PS gasoline three-cylinder joined the gasoline range.

Equipment and Safety

After the facelift, the crossover partially shed its off-road look.

Initially, Ford had a simple offering: one equipment line with 16-inch light metal wheels, air conditioning, and a CD radio.

Later, four equipment lines became available. If you're after a sporty look, the "ST Line" variation will suit you. Optional extras included two-tone paint, Xenon headlights, and partial leather seats.

Since 2020, there's been the "Active" design line, which comes with increased ground clearance and body protection panels as standard features.

Conclusion

If you're in the market for a small SUV, the Ford EcoSport is worth considering. Just make sure you're exploring well-maintained, TÜV-approved vehicles.

On mobile.de, there are around 2600 used EcoSport models of the second generation up for grabs. Prices start at approximately €6,000.

The seventh generation of the Fiesta (2008 to 2017) served as the technology donor for the EcoSport.
