Cologne: 18 Individuals Fall Victim to Poisoning at an Illicit Rave

During a party at an old fortification in Cologne, one person passed out. Her friend contacted the emergency services. Upon reaching the location, the fire department discovered that the carbon monoxide levels were extremely high.

After a party at an old fortification in Cologne, 18 people needed to be hospitalized due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Officials confirmed that a participant at the unauthorized event had dialed the emergency services that night because her friend had fainted.

As soon as the individual entered the Fort X site – part of the old fortifications – a carbon monoxide warning alarm went off. The carbon monoxide concentrations in the surrounding air were significantly elevated.

The Cologne fire department noted, "This reading poses an immediate threat to life within the area." Around 50 to 100 guests were present during the gathering. The rescue team quickly evacuated the premises and dispatched more fire and rescue vehicles. Several partygoers mentioned feeling unwell, with complaints of headaches, weakness, and dizziness. Carbon monoxide assessments indicated that 18 people exhibited symptoms of poisoning. One individual required further treatment in a pressure chamber.

There was a possibility that some of the attendees had escaped into the nearby area and might need medical attention. Authorities conducted a search with foot patrols and a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera, but they were unable to locate any other affected individuals. Untreated carbon monoxide poisoning can result in permanent brain and nerve damage as well as temporary seizures or loss of consciousness. The entire operation involved 60 emergency personnel and 21 vehicles.
