Winter world to fetish - Christmas markets in Berlin

The hustle and bustle of the Christmas markets in Berlin begins long before the gift-giving hype. The "Winterwelt" at Potsdamer Platz with its toboggan run, for example, has been open since the end of October, with the associated Christmas market following from November 27. Berlin has around 60 Christmas markets to offer, some of them for a fee and organized by event agencies, others with a historical design or in the style of a country, such as British, Swedish or Danish.

Those who like a Christmas atmosphere at the beginning of November can head to Lichtenberg, for example. The fair on Landsberger Allee is the successor to the former "Winterzauber" on Alexanderplatz, where construction is currently underway. Every Wednesday is Children's Day with reduced prices on the rides. The "Glühwald" opens at Mercedes Platz near the Spree.

Video installations at "Christmas at the Tierpark"

Christmas at the Tierpark" in Lichtenberg, which starts on November 15, is an unusual event. According to the organizers, a tour of video projections and light art will be created in the zoo for the pre-Christmas period, which will transport visitors into a jungle world with reggae music. Tickets are available from 15.50 euros for adults and from 11 euros for children over the age of five, senior citizens, students and schoolchildren. The Christmas Garden Berlin in the Botanical Garden also promises a spectacle. "Santa Claus comes flying to Berlin on a colorfully illuminated wall of water mist measuring eighteen by eight meters," promise the organizers (from 17 November, 16.50 euros, concessions 12 euros).

For lovers of smaller markets, the "Lucia" Christmas market in the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg is an option. From November 27, a Swedish fire and an art object called an "open-air coat heater" will be providing visitors with warmth. The Alt-Rixdorf Christmas market on Richardplatz in Neukölln is also very popular and therefore well attended on the second weekend of Advent.

Arts and crafts in Zehlendorf or sexy in Kreuzberg

The arts and crafts Christmas market on Mexikoplatz in Zehlendorf has been around for 30 years. On the first three Sundays of Advent, traders and craftspeople offer their items for sale here. The indoor flea market at Arena Treptow is the place to go on the first weekend of Advent for Christmas gifts in the areas of vinyl, leather and fetish. The "Naughty Winter Market" promises 50 stalls for an entrance fee of five euros, as well as shows and music.

The classics at Bebelplatz (formerly Gendarmenmarkt) and Charlottenburg Palace are more down-to-earth. Both start on November 27 and run until December 31. Visiting the Christmas market in Charlottenburg is free of charge. The special thing here: The location directly in front of the palace creates a festive atmosphere. The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation would also like to draw attention to the range of Christmas tours around the palace, which can be booked for groups on the date of their choice.

At the beginning of December, one can immerse oneself in the charming atmosphere of the Swedish-themed "Lucia" Christmas market in Prenzlauer Berg. Warmth is provided by a Swedish fire and an open-air coat heater.

During the Christmas period, "Christmas at the Tierpark" in Lichtenberg offers a unique experience with video installations and light art, transporting visitors into a jungle world with reggae music.
