2023 - Imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny is sentenced to another 19 years in a labor camp for alleged extremism. The sentence is handed down in a trial widely criticized as politically motivated.

1964 - The "Gulf of Tonkin Incident" occurs when U.S. destroyers are supposedly attacked by North Vietnamese patrol boats. The U.S. Congress subsequently approves the bombing of North Vietnam on August 7. It is later revealed to be a deliberate falsehood.

1944 - The Jewish girl Anne Frank is discovered with her family in a hiding place in Amsterdam and deported to a concentration camp in Germany.

1789 - The French National Assembly abolishes feudalism. All privileges of the nobility and clergy are abolished.

1704 - During the War of the Spanish Succession, a British fleet occupies the Rock of Gibraltar. In 1713, the Treaty of Utrecht formally grants the territory to the British.
