1984 - In West Germany, the use of seat belts in the back seats of cars becomes mandatory, and a fine is introduced for not wearing seat belts in the front seats.

1979 - The "test-tube city" of Lahn is dissolved after just 31 months. The merger of Gießen, Wetzlar, and 14 surrounding municipalities into a new metropolis by decree was not accepted by the population.

1944 - The Warsaw Uprising of the Polish underground army against the German occupation begins. The uprising fails, with 200,000 people losing their lives by October 1944.

1844 - Berlin's Zoological Garden is opened. At the time, it was located far outside the city limits on the southwestern edge of the Großer Tiergarten and is now Germany's oldest zoo.

1714 - Elector George Ludwig of Hanover becomes King George I of Great Britain and Ireland. He is the first Welf on the British throne.
