VW T7 - the new generation of van rolls ahead

The first Ford Transit was once developed in the 1950s by the father of the first VW Transporter. Now, a new VW Transporter is coming to market that is based on Ford technology.

The Transporter T7 is the second new model from VW Commercial Vehicles to come from a cooperation with Ford and is essentially based on Ford technology. Despite a VW face, the proportions of the Ford Transit are clearly recognizable from various perspectives.

The Transporter is available as a Kombi, panel van, and pickup, as well as a fully glazed, nine-seater bus, in two lengths of 5.05 and 5.45 meters, and with a loading volume of 5.8 or 9.0 cubic meters. The payload capacity is up to 1.33 tons, and the towing capacity is up to 2.8 tons.

Available from early 2025

Like the Transit, the T7 family, available from early 2025, offers diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains, as well as an optional all-wheel-drive system. The diesel engines range from 81 kW/110 PS to 125 kW/170 PS.

Volkswagen also showcases the nine-seat Caravelle based on Ford.

The part-time electric eHybrid has a system output of 171 kW/232 PS. Electric powertrains are available with 136 PS, 218 PS, and 286 PS, each with a 64 kWh battery. A variant with a smaller battery and less power for pure urban use will follow, as will an electric all-wheel-drive version.

12-inch display and 13-inch infotainment touchscreen

The cockpit features a digital instrument cluster with a 12-inch display and a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen. Some control buttons move to the steering wheel, which also has a gearshift lever for the optional automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes smartphone connectivity, DAB+ radio, and the required assistants.

The short Transporter starts at around 43,800 euros, with the long version costing around 2,000 euros more. The Kombi starts at at least 48,400 euros, and the pickup with a double cab costs around 46,600 euros.

The cockpit of the new VW T7 aka Ford Transit relies on display displays.

The cooperation between VW Commercial Vehicles and Ford that led to the Transporter T7 originated from the use of Ford technology in the new VW Transporter. Consumers can expect various powertrain options on the Transporter T7 family, originating from its Ford roots, with availability starting from early 2025.
