U.S. flag was inverted at Justice Samuel Alito's residence following the 2020 election.

A reversed American flag, a symbol employed by certain backers of ex-President Donald Trump who contested Joe Biden's 2020 electoral triumph, was seen outside the dwellings of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito following the vote, The New York Times disclosed on Thursday.

U.S. flag was inverted at Justice Samuel Alito's residence following the 2020 election.

It's highly likely that this disclosure will result in demands for Justice Alito, one of the conservative judges on the bench, to step aside from various significant cases scheduled for this year that concern the election and the US Capitol assault. Among these is the high-profile issue of whether Trump can claim immunity from prosecution for interfering with the federal election process.

The New York Times shared an image of the flag, claiming it was spotted hanging outside Alito's residence in Alexandria, Virginia, on January 17, 2021.

A representative from the Supreme Court has yet to comment on the matter when contacted by CNN. The news outlet has not independently corroborated the existence of the inverted flag.

"I had no role at all in the flying of the flag," Alito wrote in an email to the Times. "My wife briefly put it up as a response to a neighbor's use of offensive and personally insulting language on their yard signs."

The image of the inverted U.S. flag has sparked controversy, raising questions about its intent and symbolism outside Justice Alito's residence. The U.S. flag code specifically prohibits flying the flag upside down except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme peril to life or property.
