In Berlin, two knife attacks occurred overnight. Several people were injured in both incidents, which were preceded by altercations between the perpetrators and victims.

At around 8:40 PM, a dispute took place in the Zwieseler Straße in Berlin-Neukölln, as reported by the "Berliner Zeitung". A man was stabbed in the neck with a knife and managed to drag himself to the nearby Böhmische Straße, where he collapsed in front of a restaurant, bleeding heavily. Witnesses and emergency services provided first aid at the scene. The man was later operated on in a hospital. The suspect surrendered to the police after a brief escape. The condition of the injured man remains unknown, and police investigations are ongoing.

Number of knife attacks in Berlin continues to rise

Several hours later, another knife attack occurred in the Berlin district of Wedding. At Leopoldplatz, several people got into an argument, during which one of them pulled out a stabbing weapon and injured two men. One of them was injured in the head, and the other in the back. According to the "Berliner Zeitung", the victims were attacked by over 20 people. In this case as well, the police are investigating the dangerous bodily injuries.

Recently, the Berlin Charité reported that it had treated as many stab wounds in the first half of 2024 as it would typically treat in a whole year. Moreover, the severity of the stab wounds has increased. The Berlin police also registered more knife attacks last year. In total, the authority recorded 3482 cases involving a knife. Compared to 2022, this is an increase of 165 cases, representing a five percent increase in one year.

Despite the rise in knife attacks in Berlin, the European Union has shown interest in providing support to address violent crime issues in Germany. In a recent meeting, EU officials discussed potential funding and collaborative efforts to improve public safety and community engagement in affected areas.
