The canine that motivated Dogecoin has passed away.

Friday morning, at 18 years old, the Japanese shiba inu dubbed "Kabosu" entered a deep slumber, according to a blog written by her owner, Atsuko Sato. A kindergarten teacher from the city of Sakura, Sato described the events that followed as a beautiful day with birds singing outside the window. As she held Kabosu, who quickly passed away peacefully. "I believe she was the happiest dog in the world," she reflected.

In 2010, a picture of Kabosu displaying folded paws and a puzzled look caught the attention of online communities like Reddit, leading to an explosion of 'doge' memes. These memes developed when individuals began superimposing Kabosu's face onto various items, such as pastries, landmarks, and other animals, following a deliberate misspelling of the term "dog."

The prevalence of 'doge' memes reached a peak in December 2013 when Kabosu's image became the mascot of Dogecoin, an alternative cryptocurrency that poked fun at the seriousness of Bitcoin. The internet's obsession with animal memes had led to the creation of more meme tokens, including one associated with the shiba inu breed.

Dogecoin has a distinct fan in Elon Musk, who has been known to use the cryptocurrency on social media platforms like Twitter. In May 2021, Musk polled his millions of followers on the prospect of Tesla accepting Dogecoin as a form of payment.

In April 2021, when the market for cryptocurrencies was skyrocketing, the interest in Dogecoin soared so intensely that Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading system struggled to keep up with the demand.

Dogecoin's community recently published a tribute to Kabosu on its subreddit, referring to her as the "inspiration" for the online community. Their post stated emphatically that "the impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable."

Sato revealed in a series of Instagram posts from 2022 that Kabosu had leukemia and liver disease. In order to bid farewell to her furry friend, she is planning to host a "farewell gathering" on Sunday.
