Suspected shooter in Halle may have been moved from jail to medical facility

In 2019, Stephan Balliet carried out a racist and anti-Semitic attack in Halle, resulting in the death of two people. Since then, he's been kept in maximum security. Today, he's been transferred to a hospital in Erfurt due to health issues, with "heavy police presence" present.

The convict behind the Halle attack has been taken to a hospital in Erfurt after developing health problems. Both "Mitteldeutsche Zeitung" and "Bild" newspapers reported this news. As per "Bild", Balliet is reported to have a ruptured spleen and doesn't want surgery. An official from the Thuringian Ministry of Justice confirmed that a prisoner was admitted to the hospital in Erfurt on Friday due to health issues.

Balliet is currently serving his sentence in the Tonna prison near Bad Langensalza, Thuringia. The Gotha State Police Inspection confirmed that "a high-priority prisoner was escorted from a prison to a hospital in Erfurt and received medical treatment". The prisoner was treated "with a strong police presence". The police didn't provide any more details, citing "tactical reasons".

In 2020, Balliet was sentenced to life imprisonment with preventive detention for the racist and anti-Semitic attack outside the synagogue in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. On October 9, 2019, during the highest Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, he tried to storm the synagogue in Halle and cause a massacre. When that failed, he killed two people near the synagogue instead.

Earlier this year, Balliet was also sentenced to seven years in prison for taking hostages in Burg prison. He claimed he wanted to break out of prison.
