In Australia, a 65-year-old man was fined an astronomical 80,000 AUD (approximately 48,000 Euros) due to the demise of 71 kangaroos on his property. Courts in Shepparton, situated north of Melbourne, pronounced the man guilty of causing distress and suffering to Eastern Grey Giant Kangaroos, according to local news sources, referencing the justice system. Among the deceased kangaroos were two young ones, referred to as "joey."

The convicted individual did have a license for wildlife management, but he admitted to enlisting additional shooters employing inhumane killing techniques.

Permit to Eliminate

In an attempt to address the escalating kangaroo population in certain regions, authorities issue permits permitting kangaroos to be culled. These permits bear stringent regulations - any form of animal mistreatment is explicitly forbidden.

Back in 2021, veterinarians unearthed numerous piles of slain kangaroos stacked tall on a property in northern Victoria. It was discovered that many of these animals did not succumb to gunshots immediately, as mandated by law, but instead perished in agony.

Babe succumbed to starvation and hypothermia

Moreover, one of the two baby kangaroos, colloquially known as 'joey' in Australia, met a dire end due to starvation, exhaustion, and hypothermia following its mother's death. The other seemed to have suffocated within its mother's pouch.

Cruelty toward native wildlife is perpetually unlawful and unacceptable, the relevant conservation authority proclaimed. Its head, Kate Gavens, underlined that her department takes animal cruelty extremely seriously. "Permit holders for 'Wildlife Management' are tasked with ensuring the requisites for animal wellbeing are met," she stated.

There exist four primary species of emblematic marsupials: the Red Kangaroo, the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, the Western Grey Kangaroo, and the Antilopine Kangaroo. The Eastern Grey Kangaroo, scientifically known as Macropus giganteus, can be found in the eastern and southeastern parts of Australia as well as Tasmania.

The conservation authority strongly discourages any form of mistreatment towards permitted kangaroo culling, as specified in the permit's regulations.

Other permit holders must adhere strictly to the animals' wellbeing guidelines, avoiding actions like inhumane killing techniques, as stressed by Kate Gavens.
