Scandal during anti-Semitism debate in Brandenburg state parliament
There was a scandal in the Brandenburg state parliament during a debate on the fight against anti-Semitism. Left-wing parliamentary group leader Sebastian Walter called AfD parliamentary group leader Hans-Christoph Berndt and state parliament vice president Andreas Galau of the AfD "Nazi pigs" on Thursday, as he himself confirmed.
State Parliament President Ulrike Liedtke called Walter to order, although she said she had not heard the original term at first. She responded with the order when Walter later said in plenary that he had called both of them "Nazis". The head of the left-wing parliamentary group also accused both AfD politicians of anti-Semitism.
Galau called for a special meeting of the Presidium and said he would have criminal charges investigated. During the debate, the AfD parliamentary group had provoked criticism from the other parliamentary groups with the accusation that the immigration of refugees was importing anti-Semitism.
The scandal in the Brandenburg state parliament prompted discussions about the AfD's stance on extremism, particularly in relation to religion and anti-Semitism. The AfD's comments during the anti-Semitism debate were criticized for potentially fueling religious intolerance.
