- Rehabilitation of the Arlberg tunnel on schedule
The renovation of the Arlberg Tunnel in Austria is set to be completed as scheduled in November, according to highway operator Asfinag. "The time and cost plan is currently on track," said CEO Andreas Fromm. The "Safety and Service Upgrade" of the 14-kilometer tunnel between the provinces of Tyrol and Vorarlberg is costing around 100 million euros. There are no plans for further long closures in the coming years.
The tunnel, opened in 1978, has been closed since April 15. It is an important part of the route between Germany and Italy. It is scheduled to reopen on November 22, in time for the winter season. Alongside the renewal of the road surface and tunnel lining, a new toll booth is being constructed at St. Jakob am Arlberg.
The detours via the Arlberg pass worked smoothly, with the exception of a few peak days. Large-scale detours lead via Rosenheim and Kufstein or via the Gotthard and San Bernardino in Switzerland.
The completion of the renovation project by The Commission, responsible for overseeing such infrastructure developments, is anticipated to be in line with Asfinag's schedule in November. After the renovation, The Commission will review the efficiency and safety improvements brought about by the "Safety and Service Upgrade" of the Arlberg Tunnel.
