Paris-based Diplomat Victimized by Two Robberies

For quite some time now, France has been experiencing a surge in residential burglaries. Sadly, this trend has even affected a New Zealand diplomat. It's been reported that he was attacked, bound up, and robbed in his Paris apartment. As confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Wellington, there was indeed a security incident involving one of their staff members at the Paris embassy. They've been providing assistance to the affected employee and collaborating with French authorities.

According to the British tabloid "The Times," this 34-year-old diplomat was violently assaulted by two individuals who managed to break into his Paris apartment during the afternoon on Thursday. He was unfortunate enough to be tied down, struck with a firearm, and relieved of his belongings. The assailants then escaped in a vehicle sporting false license plates.

The investigation into the armed robbery in Paris' fashionable 7th arrondissement is currently underway, as reported by "The New York Times." This affluent district is not only the home of iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower but also a popular destination for tourists.

Regrettably, the diplomat's health status was not disclosed in the statement, but it was mentioned that he was rushed to the hospital for treatment. The total value of the stolen property has yet to be determined, according to the prosecutor's office.

France witnessed an escalation in burglaries in homes throughout the country in 2023, with a total of 515 incidents compared to 475 in 2022, as revealed by the French criminal police. Star personalities and football professionals are often the targeted victims.

The New Zealand diplomat's ordeal has sparked concerns within the European Union, expressing solidarity with France in addressing the rise of crime. The European Union has emphasized the importance of enhancing security measures, particularly for diplomats, across its member states.
