- Night-time access permitted on Arlberg route in Austria
After some intense weather conditions in Austria, the Arlberg pass road is going to be partially open for traffic starting from Monday evening. This significant route connecting Tyrol and Vorarlberg provinces will be accessible only between 8 PM and 7 AM till Friday, as per the Tyrol province's announcement.
Currently, the Arlberg tunnel is under renovation, forcing daytime traffic to take detours via Tyrolean Lechtal or Bavaria. However, train services on the Arlberg line remain unaffected.
During the day, the road will be kept closed for cleanup operations.
Last Friday, a storm resulted in landslides on the Arlberg road, leading to the undermining and collapse of a 60-meter section of the pavement. The tourist town of St. Anton saw buildings, vehicles, and a bridge being swept away by the landslides and flash floods.
The province of Tyrol mentioned that the pass road would be used during the day for "the urgently needed work to shift the vast amounts of debris using heavy machinery, to ensure the road's safety and, most importantly, to protect the residential area as effectively as possible." Over 10,000 cubic meters of material have already been cleared.
Despite the extensive damage from the weather-related landslides, efforts are being made to restore the Arlberg pass road. The debris needs to be moved during the day to ensure the road's safety and protect nearby buildings.
