Legendary Mirage in Las Vegas to shut down following 34 years of operation.

A 3,000-room resort is set to shut down on July 17, undergoing a three-year renovation that will eliminate any traces of the Mirage and its tropical theme.

The Mirage, which opened in 1989 by casino mogul Steve Wynn, played a crucial role in ushering in an era of luxurious resorts on the Strip. This famous resort was the first to feature attractions along the walkway. Other resorts, like Bellagio and Venetian, followed suit with their dancing fountains and canals.

The Mirage's Facebook account shared their anticipation for the start of a new chapter, indicating that Hard Rock Las Vegas would bring entertainment, innovative ideas, and top-notch hospitality to the Strip. The account also reveals a host of memories shared by commenters.

The resort stands out as a Las Vegas icon, housing classic spectacles like Siegfried and Roy's white tigers show and a Cirque du Soleil performance set to Beatles tunes. By 2027, the Mirage will be rebranded as Hard Rock Las Vegas, boasting a 700-foot high hotel tower resembling a guitar, much like the Florida location. The volcano will be leveled to allow for additional rooms.

MGM Resorts purchased the Mirage from Wynn in 2000 and later sold it to Hard Rock International for over $1 billion in 2022. Prior to this, Hard Rock International had owned a property off the Strip that is presently known as Virgin Hotel.

The closure will result in the dismissal of over 3,000 employees, starting in July. Hard Rock plans to provide more than $80 million in settlements. The Culinary Workers Union, which represents half of the Mirage's employees, stated in a statement that workers will receive $2,000 for each year of service, with the option of returning once the hotel reopens.

Reservations for guests beyond July 14 will be nullified, and full refunds will be given. Mirage's casino chips must be used by that date at the Mirage but can be swapped for another 120 days at its neighboring property, Treasure Island, until the resort's closing.
