Israel Limits Access for Spanish Diplomats Over Palestine Recognition

Two days following Spain's announcement of plans to recognize Palestine, Israel has enforced restrictions on the duties of Spanish diplomats within the country. The Spanish Embassy in Tel Aviv and Consulate General in East Jerusalem will, henceforth, be unable to provide aid to Palestinians from the Israeli-controlled West Bank, per Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Platform X.

Katz also rationalized this decision using a remark made by a Spanish Deputy Prime Minister. In a speech on X, the official had proclaimed: "Palestine will be free from the river to the sea."

This saying represents a desire for a completely independent Palestine occupying the spot where Israel presently exists, with borders stretching from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Yolanda Díaz, a Spanish Deputy Prime Minister, hails from the left-wing alliance Sumar. She is part of the small coalition governing under Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez.

On Wednesday, Spain, Ireland, and Norway revealed their intention to acknowledge Palestine as an independent nation by the end of May. The Israeli community took offense to this news.
