"In 'The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson,' the focus is on Nicole as a person beyond her tragic death"

After 30 years since Nicole Brown Simpson's murder and just a few months following O.J. Simpson's death, Lifetime revisits "the trial of the century" in "The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson." The title suggests an attempt to portray her as more than just a victim. Although the series...

"In 'The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson,' the focus is on Nicole as a person beyond her tragic death"

When Nicole Brown was horribly killed in June 1994 and her husband, football star O.J. Simpson, was accused of the crime, some details have undoubtedly faded from our memories. For instance, she was just a 18-year-old hostess when Simpson met her - "a girl from Laguna" as her sister Dominique Brown calls her, who was "swept off her feet" by him.

Nicole's other sisters, Denise and Tanya, and some family friends recall her life with emotional moments, like visits to her gravesite in one of the four chapters. They also express anger about how the media depicted her, portraying her as a "party girl" when she wasn't. These portrayals were often combined with scandalous photographs, like one tabloid image of her in a bikini on a boat.

The producers, who have worked on Lifetime's "Surviving R. Kelly", employ old family home videos to create a vivid portrait of Nicole's supposedly ideal upbringing, her whirlwind romance with Simpson, and the darker aspects of their marriage. This includes revisiting the history of domestic-violence calls that dated back to Simpson's first wife, Marguerite, as well as speaking to a retired LAPD detective, Terry Schauer, who responded to an incident at their house.

The documentary details Simpson's controlling attitude, like when he required Nicole not to breastfeed, his infidelity, and his jealousy towards anyone Nicole was involved with, specifically another renowned USC running back, Marcus Allen.

The family members, close friends, and involved parties are all older now, but the producers leave no stones unturned. This includes interviews with the Brown sisters, Kato Kaelin, Faye Resnick, detective Tom Lange, and other notable individuals associated with the trial. Some of these stories are truly heart-wrenching, such as Denise remembering a "gut-wrenching, chilling scream from my parents' bedroom" when they learned about Nicole's death.

In the context of Simpson's passing in April, people are once again discussing the case. However, the focus of this documentary is on how Simpson's actions and behavior affected Nicole. Denise, the most vocal and visible family member during and after the trial, states that she intends to avoid talking about Simpson.

This documentary, titled "The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson", is unlikely to alter many opinions or match the in-depth coverage provided by other productions like "American Crime Story" or the comprehensive ESPN docuseries "O.J.: Made in America".

Simpson's trial aroused media interest mainly because of his fame and the televised trial, and it remains a popular topic today. Lifetime has succeeded in contributing another series to this collection, but without significantly advancing the conversation.

"The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson" will air on June 1st and 2nd at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
