In the districts of Verden and Diepholz, heavy rain on Wednesday (7.8.) led to flooded streets and cellars. Due to a fallen tree in the track bed near Syke, the railway line between Bremen and Osnabrück had to be closed in the afternoon. This resulted in delays in local and long-distance traffic, as a railway spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday. By evening, one track was initially reopened.

In the Syke district of Barrien, the improvised roof of a supermarket also failed. Due to the ongoing renovation, water was able to seep into a plastic sheet. "The roof was open due to the expansion work," said Lutz Budelmann, spokesperson for the local fire department in the district of Diepholz. Around 20 people immediately left the store, and there were no injuries.

The store was closed, and a structural engineer had to be called in. The branch was expected to reopen today (Friday), the company wrote. "This was a thunderstorm cell with heavy rain, hundreds of liters of water came down," the spokesperson explained.

There were around 20 incidents in Weyhe, including a flooded railway underpass. Near Weyhe, a tree fell onto parked cars, a police spokesperson confirmed. In the Twistringen area, a tree fell onto a moving car, but no one was injured.

The flood-affected supermarket in Barrien decided to call in a structural engineer to assess the damage. Despite the other incidents, such as a flooded railway underpass in Weyhe and a tree falling onto parked cars, the affected supermarket was the only one that required such extensive repairs due to 'Other' factors, specifically the failure of the improvised roof and seepage caused by ongoing renovations.

During the assessments, it was discovered that 'Other' factors, like the expansion work and the failed improvised roof, contributed to the significant water damage in the supermarket in Barrien.
