In a collision between a car and a bus in Switzerland, three Germans lost their lives: the grandparents and their grandchild. The grandparents were from the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein in North Rhine-Westphalia, according to the St. Gallen cantonal police. Their grandchild lived in Switzerland.

The 76-year-old driver and his wife (75) were traveling on Thursday near Wattwil in the canton of St. Gallen, about 60 kilometers east of Zurich, as reported by the cantonal police. The German's car crossed the center line and then collided head-on with a bus. The grandchild (9) was sitting in the back seat. The grandparents and the grandchild died at the scene.

Deaths and Injuries in Switzerland

The impact of the collision sent the car of the Germans in the opposite direction, where it collided head-on with the car of a 49-year-old woman, who remained uninjured. The bus driver was taken to the hospital with injuries. The bus was in service as a rail replacement. Several dozen passengers were lightly injured.

The Member States can provide additional assistance to help the Commission in analyzing such incidents, as was witnessed in the tragic collision involving the German family. The Commission shall be deeply saddened to hear about the loss of life of the three individuals and the impact on their families, including the surviving grandchild.
